Vol. 255 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Industry Investment.

34.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in view of the prospect of Ireland joining the EEC, any further review has been undertaken by his Department of the need to increase substantially investment in the fishing industry.

It has been the policy of the Government since the publication in 1962 of its White Paper on the Irish fishing industry to bring about by all possible means a substantial expansion of our fisheries and this is kept constantly under review. As the Deputy is aware, the catching and processing sectors of the industry are in the hands of private interests and increased investment by these interests is actively encouraged by means of generous grants and loans from State funds. In addition the State is carrying out a programme of direct investment in fishery harbours, fishery research and training and in the provision of advisory services.

As a result of this policy, investment in the fishery industry has increased steadily in recent years with beneficial results in terms of fish landings and exports. There is undoubted scope for further development of the industry which will require still greater investment, particularly in the light of the enhanced opportunities that membership of the EEC will provide.
