Vol. 256 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Workers.

73.

asked the Minister for Labour the total number of workers who have been declared redundant this year up to the latest date for which figures are available.

The number of redundancies notified under the Redundancy Payments Acts in the first nine months of 1971 was 5,715.

It is nearly twice as many as last year.

Almost twice that for the corresponding period.

Did the Minister hear the statement from the Chairman of the IDA on television in the middle of the news complete with photograph —in other words, an original statement—that 3,000 people were expected to be redundant this year? I do not know what year he was talking about. I understood it was 1971. In the first half of the year there were 3,500.

He might have been referring to the remainder of the year.

I thought he was putting a year on it.

They have the correct figures.

74.

andMr. G. Lynch asked the Minister for Labour the total number of persons who have become redundant in industry from 1st January, 1970, to the latest date for which figures are available.

The total number of redundancies in manufacturing industry notified under the Redundancy Payments Acts in the period 1st January, 1970, to 30th September, 1971, was 4,632.

75.

asked the Minister for Labour if there is any likelihood of a reduction in the number of redundancies in this country in the near future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply by the Taoiseach yesterday to questions on this subject.

76.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware of the fact that a company (name supplied) which has made a number of workers redundant is now working under severe pressure due to shortage of labour; and what action will be taken in the matter.

The firm furnished redundancy notices in respect of 13 men between December, 1970, and July, 1971. All qualified for redundancy lump sum payments. The National Manpower Service of my Department has been in touch with the firm and was told that they have no vacancies at present.

77.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will state the number of workers in transportable goods industries and in the service industries declared redundant in the first nine months of 1970 and 1971.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, A Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it for inclusion in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—
