Vol. 256 No. 4

Written Answers. - Car Parking Revenue.

325.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total amount collected by Dublin Corporation over the past year to the latest available date from (a) parking charges and (b) revenue from leasing out car parking sites; and to what purposes these sums are, or will be, applied.

I understand from Dublin Corporation that the total amount collected during the year ended 30th September, 1971, in respect of on-street parking charges through parking meters amounted to £156,766. Information as to revenue derived by the corporation from the licensing by them to private operators of sites for use as car parks is not available in my Department. The conditions under which these sites are licensed and the disposal of the revenue are matters for the corporation.

The disposal of fees in respect of on-street parking is governed by the Road Traffic (Parking Fees) Regulations, 1969. These regulations provide that such fees shall be applied by the local authority towards the cost of administering and maintaining meter parking places and car parks and that any surplus may, with the Minister's consent, be used for the provision or extension of parking facilities, road improvements, traffic controls or similar traffic improvements. It is a matter for the corporation, within the limitations imposed by the regulations, to decide how any surplus remaining after the statutory charges have been met should be applied. My approval has not been sought by the corporation within the provisions of the regulations to the use by them of any such surplus.
