Vol. 256 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Admission to Institution.

8.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Health how long a person (name supplied) is on the waiting list for admission to a suitable institution; and when he will be admitted to such an institution.

I understand that the admission of the person concerned, who has been on a waiting list for more than seven years, to a suitable institution is made difficult by the fact that he suffers from more than one handicap but that special efforts are being made at present by the relevant health board and a particular institution to achieve his early admission.

(Cavan): In view of the fact that, as the Minister now knows, this boy has been on the waiting list since 1965, would he be good enough to take a special interest in this case and get the boy admitted to a hospital?

I have read the history of the case, which is a very sad one. This boy suffers from a multiple handicap. Apparently, there are very few children suffering from this who could be grouped together for appropriate treatment, but I understand we are reaching the end of a long and very sad story and the medical superintendent of a home is confident that this can be arranged within a few weeks.

(Cavan): I am very glad to hear that. It has been possible to take this boy on holidays for a month each year and presumably a suitable home for that period was found.
