As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Note 1. The number of institutions includes all public and private hospitals in which surgery is performed. The number of beds quoted is the total bed complement of these hospitals.

Note 2. The term "geriatric hospital" has been taken to mean an institution or home catering specially for old people. The number of institutions includes county homes and private homes for the aged and similar centres. In addition to the number of beds in these institutions, it is estimated, in the Care of the Aged Report (par. 7.22), that there are a total of 8,690 beds in general and mental hospitals occupied by geriatric patients.

Note 3. Private mental hospitals are included.

Note 4. Private Nursing Homes catering mainly for old people are included under Geriatric Hospitals.
