Vol. 258 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trading Stamps.

100.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the large amount of revenue leaving the country for trading stamps; and, if so, if he will take the necessary steps to have the purchase and use of foreign trading stamps by traders discontinued.

As I have already stated in reply to previous questions in Dáil Éireann, I would prefer to await the report of the Fair Trade Commission's inquiry into the grocery trade before reaching any final conclusions on trading stamps.

When does the Minister expect the result of that inquiry?

It is hoped that I shall have this report at the end of this month.

Would the Minister not consider there would be another way of getting around this rather than waiting for that report?

There have been a number of questions about this and I have confined myself to saying that I do not want to comment on trading stamps until I get this report. I do not feel there are any interim measures I should take.

Why should we hand over all this money to British firms when we could do with it ourselves?

I shall make a comment on them now: they are parasites.
