Vol. 258 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tallaght Factory Redundancies.

101.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the report that hundreds of women workers are to be laid off at a factory at Tallaght, County Dublin; if his Department was informed of the proposed redundancies; if so, when; and what action was taken to avert them.

I saw the report in question but the Deputy, no doubt, also saw the report on the following day to the effect that the statement in the previous report was exaggerated. I understand that certain redundancies will arise from the decision of the company to rationalise its lines of production and that the matter is the subject of discussion between the management and the trade union concerned. My Department was not informed of the proposed redundancies at the time. I understand the company did not wish to make any statement on the matter pending conclusion of the discussions with the trade union.

I am informed that the placement service of the Department of Labour is in touch with the firm with a view to placing any redundant workers in alternative employment.
