Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Insurance.

159.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will make a statement on the insuring of moneys and parcels which are accepted for delivery by his Department indicating the maximum amount and value covered; whether registration is necessary; and how information about such matters is conveyed to the public.

In the inland postal service, which includes the service to Britain and the Six Counties, letters containing money and parcels may be registered. The minimum fee is 10p which covers compensation up to £50. The fee increases by 1p steps for each additional £50 compensation, up to 17p for maximum compensation of £400.

In the international service letters only may be registered. A single fee of 10p is charged which covers compensation up to £5.44. The insurance service is however available for both letters and parcels, except in the case of a few countries. The minimum fee is 11p which covers compensation up to £16. The fee increases by 1p steps for each additional £16 compensation up to 35p for maximum compensation of £400.

This information is contained in a notice displayed in all post offices and full particulars of the services are given in the Post Office Guide.
