Vol. 259 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Garda Strength.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Gardaí stationed in Waterford city in 1960 and 1972; if it is intended to increase the Garda force serving the city in view of its increased population; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state (1) the number of Gardaí stationed in County Waterford in 1960 and 1972; (2) the number and location of Garda stations and sub-stations in use in 1960 and 1972; if he will take steps to ensure that there is an adequate number of Gardaí stationed in all rural areas of the county to protect people from attacks by criminals; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 27 and 28 together.

The strength of the Garda in Waterford city in the years mentioned is as follows:

1960

66

1972

77

The corresponding figures for County Waterford are:

1960

79

1972

76

In 1960 there were 20 stations and sub-stations in the county; at present there are 19; the station at Cappagh was closed on 1st February, 1969.

The location of Garda stations and sub-stations in the county is as follows:

Dunmore East, Passage East, Dungarvan, Ardmore, Ring, Ballymacarbery, Tallow, Cappoquin, Lismore, Villierstown, Tramore, Kill, Kilmacthomas, Kilmeadon, Portlaw, Rathgormack, Leamybrien, Stradbally and Ballyduff.

The need for an increase in strength in both city and county will be examined when extra gardaí, now being recruited, become available for assignment to the area.

I take it the Minister is advised that there will be an increase in the Garda strength both in city and county when the new recruits become available?

The Deputy can be assured of that.
