Vol. 259 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming Pools.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the provision of a swimming pool in Drogheda, County Louth.

The raising of a £50,000 loan by Drogheda Corporation from the Local Loans Fund as a major contribution towards the cost of the Drogheda swimming pool project has already been sanctioned and the submission of the technical details of the proposal is awaited.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if planning permission has been granted to Saint Joseph's School for the Deaf, Cabra, Dublin, for the building of a swimming pool; if a grant will be provided by his Department for building the pool; and the expected cost and size of the pool.

The question of planning permission is one for the local planning authority in the first instance. I understand that the planning authority have decided to grant approval to Saint Joseph's School for the Deaf, Cabra, for the building of a swimming pool subject to conditions.

Financial assistance given by my Department for the building of pools of an approved design is by way of subsidy, normally 50 per cent, towards the annual loan charges incurred by sanitary authorities on foot of loans raised by them to finance their own pools or make contributions to local voluntary organisations or school authorities building them. A decision to make a contribution rests with the local sanitary authority. No proposal has been made to my Department in the case in question.
