Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Capital Inflow.

18.

asked the Minister for Finance the rate of capital inflow into this country for each of the past five years.

Following is the net capital inflow into Ireland in each of the past five years:

£ million

1967

31.1

1968

8.4

1969

75.0

1970

67.7

1971 (estimated)

158.8

Would the Minister like to comment on the apparent discrepancy between the different years?

Would he say it was hot money?

No. The figure for 1971 is somewhat distorted as a result of the bank dispute.

What about 1968? Did the Minister say £3.4 million?

I said £8.4 million.

Is there not a big discrepancy and can the Minister give any reason?

I could not tell the Deputy offhand.

Has there been any attempt to classify this flow into categories such as short-term, longterm and medium-term? Such classification would be necessary and desirable for any Government.

No, it is not possible to do this.

Would the Minister consider taking steps through the Central Bank to make this possible?

It is not possible.
