Vol. 261 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Comhairle le Leas Óige.

33.

asked the Minister for Education if Comhairle le Leas Óige is permitted to cater for children of 12 years and younger; and, if not, what body serves this function.

Under its present constitution, Comhairle le Leas Óige caters for young people of 12 years of age and upwards.

I have not received any representations from An Chomhairle in regard to a reduction of this age limit.

As regards the under 12 age group, apart from school based activities outside normal school hours, the scouts and girl guides have special sections for those aged seven and over.

Certain other voluntary organisations also cater for this younger age group.

Dublin Corporation operates 16 play centres in various locations in the city.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary agree that there is a need for a co-ordinating body to undertake this work? Could the Department do anything to initiate the establishment of such a body?

We have had consultations with Comhairle le Leas Óige and they feel that they may not be the appropriate body. The other special arrangements which can be made are also under consideration.

Is Comhairle le Leas Óige a voluntary body?

No. It is financed considerably by the State.

Could a voluntary body be established to do this work?

I suppose it could.
