asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the serious overcrowding at Saint Ita's Hospital, Portrane, County Dublin; the proposals for alleviating this; and if he is in a position to state when the temporary buildings at Saint Ita's will be replaced.

This is primarily a matter for the Eastern Health Board. I am aware, however, that planning is at an advanced stage for the provision of new units at St. Ita's, Protrane, for disturbed adolescent and adult mentally handicapped patients. The provision of these units will improve considerably the facilities for the care and treatment of these patients. I am also aware that consideration is being given to the provision of alternative accommodation elsewhere for a considerable number of patients at present at St. Ita's. I am awaiting a report from the health board about this matter. These developments will permit the discontinuance as early as possible of the buildings which are regarded as unsatisfactory.
