Vol. 265 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Montessori Graduates.

51.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to recognise Montessori graduates for teaching in primary and national schools.

Mr. R. Burke

As the Deputy is aware, my Department have on a number of occasions considered the question of accepting the Montessori Diploma as qualifying the holder for recognition as national teacher but have decided that, while persons holding the diploma, could be recognised as teachers in national schools catering for the education of children who are mildly mentally handicapped or emotionally disturbed, they could not be regarded as being suitable for recognition generally as national teachers.

The decision is based on educational grounds, taking account of the curriculum prescribed for primary schools, the educational philosophy on which it is based, and the pedagogic requirements for its proper implementation. Having reviewed the question in all its aspects, I am satisfied that the decision should stand.

This is not to discount in any way the great and beneficial influence which the work of Dr. Montessori has had on modern educational thought and school practice, nor does it imply any criticism of the teacher training course offered in the Montessori College other than to say that it is felt that the course is not designed to produce teachers suitable for the ordinary work of our national schools.

Is this not in conflict with the stated policy of the Minister's party and with statements of individual members of that party in regard to Montessori teachers? There were promises given to Montessori teachers who were given to understand that if the Minister's party were returned to Government they would do this.

Mr. R. Burke

I am not aware of promises and even if I were so aware, I could not be bound by promises made by other persons. Obviously, I have not even heard of these promises——

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.

This is a very important question.

All questions on the Order Paper are important.

The Montessori teachers expected something more than this.

Mr. R. Burke

I can help the Deputy to some extent by saying that I will review the situation in the light of the three-year course for Montessori teachers.

The Minister will agree this course is even longer than courses for other teachers. The Montessori teachers are doing an excellent job. My two children go to Montessori schools and I know something about this.

Mr. R. Burke

I will review the situation in the light of the three-year course.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
