Vol. 265 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Old People.

172.

asked the Taoiseach the current estimated number of persons aged 65 years and over in the greater Dublin area; and the estimated number by 1976 and 1985.

The number of persons aged 65 years and over in the Dublin County Borough and County in 1971 according to preliminary results of the Census of Population taken in April of that year was 72,000. Accurate projections cannot be prepared on account of the uncertainty as to the future pattern of migration into or out of the area. However, assuming that the higher age groups are unaffected by this migration and that rates of mortality corresponding to the 1965-67 urban districts life table apply over the period, the following projected figures are obtained:—

Year

Persons 65 and over in Dublin County Borough and County

1976

76,000

1981

79,000

1986

83,000
