Vol. 266 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suburban Traffic Hazards.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious traffic hazards being caused to parents and children in suburban housing estates by the use by motor vehicle drivers of these estates as through-thoroughfares; and if he intends investigating the possibility of using methods to slow down speeding vehicles in these areas.

I am conscious that increased vehicular traffic has given rise to traffic problems including problems in housing estates. As regards the use of these estates by through traffic, measures that might be adopted are a matter for the local authority concerned acting with the consent or at the request of the Garda Commissioner.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider recommending to the Minister that methods to slow down speeding traffic be adopted? One such method which I suggest is slightly raised road ramps to prevent the type of speeding that is occurring on these roads, which I may mention were never intended to carry the volume of traffic which is coming on to them. Could I ask the Parliamentary Secretary to bring the matter to the attention of the authorities concerned as it is a matter of urgency?
