Vol. 266 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Act.

28.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied that adequate arrangements exist for the implementation of the terms of the School Attendance Act in post-primary schools in Dublin.

I have no evidence that the arrangements at present in being are inadequate, but this is a matter which is receiving, and will continue to receive, the close attention of my Department in co-operation with the enforcing authorities of the School Attendance Act.

If the present arrangements are not inadequate would the Parliamentary Secretary elaborate as to the nature of the negotiations which are taking place on this matter?

I did not say that negotiations were taking place. I did not use the word "negotiations". I said that these problems were receiving, and would continue to receive, the close attention of my Department in co-operation with the enforcing authorities of the School Attendance Act. I should like to add that I am aware that there are problems in special areas. The Deputy may be aware of some of these. These are matters which are of concern to the Department and we are trying to solve them.
