Vol. 267 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hackney Drivers' Insurance.

30.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that persons engaged in hackney work are finding it increasingly difficult to find companies that are prepared to give them the necessary insurance cover; and if he will indicate the steps he intends taking to rectify the position.

I understand that it has become more difficult for persons engaged in hackney work to obtain motor insurance cover but this may have arisen because a company which had been insuring hackney cars has recently withdrawn from the motor insurance market.

The Minister for Local Government has special machinery available for helping to secure cover for persons refused it or quoted a premium that is tantamount to refusal. If the Deputy is aware of any specific cases of difficulty I would suggest that they be referred to the Department of Local Government.
