Vol. 267 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Contributions.

75.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will indicate the contributions that will be paid by those over the £1,600 limit; and if allowance will be made for those who cannot avail of some of the benefits.

When persons, whose remuneration exceeds £1,600 a year and who are employed otherwise than by way of manual labour, become insurable under the Social Welfare Acts they will pay the same rates of social insurance contributions as other employed contributors in the same category. From 2nd July, 1973, the share of the ordinary rate of contribution payable by a man is £1.21 and by a woman £1.14. In addition a contribution of 15 pence is payable in respect of services under the Health Acts.

Persons in permanent and pensionable employment, such as employees of local authorities, teachers et cetera are insurable only for Widows' and Orphans' pensions and occupational injuries benefit and pay a special rate of contribution. The share of this contribution payable by a male employee is 24 pence; a female employee pays nothing. A contribution of 15 pence in respect of services under the Health Acts is payable by both men and women. When the remuneration limit is removed, persons in these categories whose remuneration exceeds £1,600 a year will pay the same rates of contribution.
