Vol. 267 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Multiple Sclerosis.

21.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider the issue of medical cards to all sufferers from multiple sclerosis.

22.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give an estimate of the total number of cases of multiple sclerosis in Ireland and the proportion of these in possession of medical cards; and if any special provisions are available by way of medical and surgical appliances to those who do not hold medical cards.

I propose, with your permission a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 21 and 22 together.

There are no precise figures available on the incidence of multiple sclerosis. Of some 700 known cases about 60 per cent are covered by medical cards. The determination of eligibility for medical cards is a matter for the chief executive officer of the local health board. For persons who are not covered by medical cards health boards are empowered, under the hardship provisions, to provide assistance towards the cost of medical requisites.
