asked the Minister for Labour if all the apprenticeships that are available to the different trades in the building construction industry are availed of each year.

Contracts of apprenticeship in the building and construction industry are required to be registered in AnCO. I have been advised by AnCO that all available apprenticeships in the industry are filled each year.

Is the Minister satisfied that all efforts are being made to attract apprentices to the building trade? There is a very acute shortage of qualified tradesmen in the building trade. Other apprenticeships appear more attractive, and is the Minister satisfied all the efforts that should be made are being made to attract apprentices to the building trade?

There is what could be described as a relatively serious situation looming up in the matter of apprenticeships in that there is a shortage in certain areas and that shortage will become more acute. What is needed is a fresh approach by all concerned to ensure there will not be these serious shortages of skilled personnel in future.
