Vol. 268 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Study Participation.

68.

asked the Minister for Education the extent to which this country is participating in European studies, with particular reference to NIHE.

Mr. R. Burke

European studies, construed in the widest sense, are not being neglected at the second and third levels of education and were appropriately provided for in second-level secondary schools and university institutions, particularly in the areas of European languages, literature and history, even before interest in such studies was further stimulated by the country's entry into membership of the EEC. Certain other developments in recent years, notably the introduction of teacher-exchange schemes, afford evidence of the extent to which the value of closer association with European countries in the educational field has been formally recognised.

The establishment of the National Institute for Higher Education at Limerick has, of course, coincided with the upsurge of interest in European studies generally, and the institute has wisely taken advantage of the opportunity to offer a wide range of subjects in that area at both degree and diploma level.
