Vol. 271 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Scarcity.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the scarcity of sugar in County Monaghan; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann Teoranta that supplies are being made available to their regular customers in the normal course. I understand, however, that there is at present a temporary shortfall in supplies in Northern Ireland and this may have increased demand at retail level for sugar in the County Monaghan area.

Is it not very unfair that people in Border counties are unable to obtain a supply of sugar just because there is a shortage of sugar in Northern Ireland?

I would regard it as unfair certainly to the normal purchasers in Monaghan. I gather that the Sugar Company have taken steps to increase supplies where the necessity arises to do so. If the Deputy has any particular problems he should bring them to the notice of the Sugar Company. I am sure they would be only too glad to facilitate him.

I have brought the particular wholesalers complaints to the officer——
