Vol. 271 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Animal Manure Content.

44.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will indicate the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content in animal manure as compared with artificial fertilisers.

The nutrient content of animal or farmyard manure varies but it is estimated that one ton of farmyard manure composed of cattle droppings and straw contains 9 lbs of nitrogen, 2.4 lbs of phosphorus and 13.5 lbs of potassium. By comparison one ton of each of the following artificial fertilisers contains the following quantities of these nutrients—

Calcium ammonium nitrate (26 per cent nitrogen), 580 lbs nitrogen; 8 per cent superphosphate, 180 lbs phosphorus; muriate of potash (50 per cent K), 1,120 lbs potassium; compound—10.10.20, 224 lbs nitrogen, 224 lbs phosphorus, and 448 lbs potassium.
