Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Air Pollution.

28.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the findings of the official inquiry ordered as a result of the dangerous levels of cadmium and lead recorded in the river and in the air at Avonmouth smelter.

So far as I am aware there has been no official inquiry into the matter referred to in the Deputy's question. The British Government ordered an inquiry in 1972 into lead poisoning at the smelter at Avonmouth. That inquiry was principally concerned with the health of workers employed at the plant. The committee's report, which was presented at the British Parliament in July, 1972, made a series of recommendations about measures to be taken to improve the working conditions at this plant.

The University of Bristol is at present conducting an independent study of the plant's operations with particular reference to potential damage to the environment. To date no information has been released about this study.
