No studies of mental illness are being directly undertaken by my Department. The Medico-Social Research Board recently published a comprehensive statistical study of admissions into and discharges from Irish psychiatric hospitals and units in respect of the year 1970. A number of further studies in the mental illness field, including one related to schizophrenia, have been sanctioned, and are being conducted under the auspices of the board. It will be a number of years before the results of most of these are published as they involve extensive fieldwork.
