Vol. 272 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sex Discrimination.

10.

asked the Minister for Labour if he has set up a commission to keep under review and identify discrimination on sex grounds wherever it may exist.

The Commission on the Status of Women recommended that "some financial assistance should be made available by the State to a body recognised by the Government as being representative of women's interests to assist in defraying secretarial expenses, to engage expert advice on complicated technical matters and to help meet the cost of sending persons on short training courses or to seminars dealing with matters being considered or likely to be considered by the body".

I intend setting up such a body shortly. In addition to this body which will deal with discrimination generally, I intend setting up an Equal Pay Review Committee composed of representatives of employers and trade unions to monitor the progress of the movement towards equal pay and to recommend on any deficiencies which become apparent in the legislation at present before the Dáil.

The setting up of such bodies does not detract, however, from the responsibility of each Government Department for follow-up action on the recommendations and suggestions in the Report of the Commission on the Status of Women, which the Government have accepted.
