Vol. 272 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Broad-Leaved Forests.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that the spread of agriculture has caused the disappearance of broad-leaved forests in central Europe, he will take measures to ensure this will not happen in Ireland.

I am satisfied that existing statutory powers are sufficient to control the felling of trees in rural areas whether broad-leaves or conifers. Additionally the Forest and Wildlife Service plant broadleaved trees as a matter of policy wherever it has land suitable for such trees, while in the sphere of private planting, there is a special grant scheme to encourage the planting of broadleaves.
