Vol. 272 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fish Conservation.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the fact that certain forestry and land projects initiated by his Department may cause siltation of nearby rivers and streams, any effort has been made to ensure the conservation of fish stocks in these waters.

Apart from the minor drainage operations carried out by the Land Commission in connection with the division of land, my Department does not undertake land projects as such.

In the case of forestry development, I am satisfied that the effect of initial drainage work in the matter of silting is negligible and is in any event of temporary duration. Overall the establishment of forests preserves land slopes from erosion and reduces the risk of streams and rivers silting up.
