Vol. 274 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ban-Ghardaí Patrol Cars.

5.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is proposed to provide Ban-Ghardaí with patrol cars.

The Commissioner of the Garda Síochána has informed me that he is satisfied that transport facilities available for Ban-Ghardaí are adequate and that there is no need to allocate patrol cars specially to them.

In certain cases of reported disturbances between, for example. husband and wife, would a Ban-Gharda normally accompany the patrol car to investigate this complaint?

There is no hard and fast rule with regard to that particular type of incident. If the members investigating it felt that the presence of a Ban-Gharda would be helpful undoubtedly she would be asked to accompany them but in a situation like that it has to be left to the officers investigating the incident.

May I take it that in an investigation of this kind where a Ban-Gharda is required there would be no question of her having to take public transport?

If her presence was required in the course of her duty she would be afforded the same transport as any other member of the force, in a patrol car.
