Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Mining Licence.

47.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he intends to grant a licence to a mining company (name supplied) in County Meath.

I have indicated to the company the terms on which I am prepared to grant them a lease of these State resources, and I am awaiting their response.

When was this made to the company concerned?

Lengthy contacts between my Department and the company have taken place, including a number of meetings in two of which in the recent past I myself have participated. I think that since this is a very delicate area of negotiations the interests of all parties are best served by continuing confidentiality. I will give as much information as I can as soon as I can.

It is holding up employment by this firm, waiting until negotiations are completed. Has the Minister made any offer to take a share in the company?

I do not want to go into the details but I can give reassurance in this sense. The company know that they can meet my officials and myself, if I am deemed necessary at any delicate point, at very short notice. We have been able to respond to their requests in the recent past, within 48 hours' notice. They know I will do that again. This is a matter that should be moved on quickly.

Has there been application from more than one company for a licence in this area?

That seems to be a separate question.

I have not an application for a licence for more than one company.

Would the Minister——

The Deputy must have some regard for the authority of the Chair. Next Question, please.

Does the Minister anticipate an early decision?
