Vol. 274 No. 9

Royal Hospital for Incurables Dublin (Charter Amendment) Order, 1974: Motion.

I move:

That Dáil Éireann approves the following Order in draft:—

Royal Hospital for Incurables Dublin (Charter Amendment) Order, 1974.

a copy of which Order in draft form was laid before Dáil Éireann on 5th July, 1974.

As explained in the memorandum which accompanied the draft order circulated to Deputies, the managing committee of the Royal Hospital for Incurables, Dublin, applied for an Order to be made substituting "The Royal Hospital, Donnybrook" as the name of the hospital instead of "The Royal Hospital for Incurables, Dublin".

I do not think I need argue the case for the change in title. The word "incurables" is an emotive one which could very well be dropped, and indeed, as has been explained, the hospital wants to drop it.

I gladly avail myself of this opportunity to pay public tribute to the splendid work of the hospital management, staff and others associated with the work there. It is a remarkable achievement by any standards that, for over 200 years, a work of a charitable and compassionate nature has endured. I wish to commend and encourage those associated with the work to continue and persevere in their efforts.

The purpose of the Draft Order before the House is to provide for the legal change in the name of the hospital and I ask the House to approve it.

I am not certain that I picked up a great deal of what the Parliamentary Secretary said but I take it that the purpose of this motion is to simply change the name of the hospital from the Royal Hospital for Incurables to the Royal Hospital, Donn' brook. This party has no objection to that change and I think it is only right and proper and in accordance with the wishes of the hospital administration. In my view it puts a more realistic and modern title on this very valuable institution. I should like to join with the Parliamentary Secretary in paying tribute to those who have for many years done splendid work in this particular hospital for the benefit of people who are seriously ill. I am glad to agree, on behalf of the Fianna Fáil Party, that this motion should be passed.

Question put and agreed to.
