Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killarney Schools.

59.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the proposed new primary and post-primary schools for Killarney; and when work is expected to commence on each of these projects including the proposed new school in Ballycasheen, County Kerry.

Mr. R. Burke

Sketch plans have been approved for a new 16 classroom national school to be erected on the Mercy Convent grounds in Killarney town. My Department will sanction a grant towards its erection when title to the site has been furnished and agreement reached on the local contribution to be provided towards the cost of the school.

It has been decided to provide two national schools at Ballycasheen on a site which has been approved and acquired by the school manager. Preliminary arrangements, including the preparation of sketch plans, have yet to be finalised.

It is not possible to say at this stage when work on the erection of the schools will commence.

There will be provided in Killarney a second-level school complex to be known as Killarney Combined Secondary Schools, conducted by the vocational education committee and the Presentation Sisters. Parents will be represented on the management boards of each school. The complex will include specialist facilities built and owned by the Minister for Education and available to all the pupils of the combined schools.
