Vol. 275 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming Pool Programme.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has completed the reassessment of the swimming pool programme mentioned in a reply of 5th June, 1973; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

Following an assessment of swimming pool proposals on hands I approved in May, 1974 of the provision of pools in Cavan, Kells, Trim, Dungarvan and Roscrea. A proposal by Dublin County Council to contribute towards the cost of swimming pools in the new community schools at Tallaght and Coolmine (Blanchardstown) was approved in June, 1974.

I should also mention that I am having a review carried out of problems involved in the operation of swimming pools, including such aspects as running costs, management and promotion of pool use.

The Minister referred on another occasion to the fact that he was carrying out a reassessment of the swimming pool programme. From the reply I am not too clear about what the outcome of the reassessment was.

The Deputy must understand that the whole question of pools, what they were costing to erect and to run, is to some extent still under consideration. The proposals must come from the local authority and at present there are seven proposals that have been mentioned but none of them are being held up by the Department.
