Vol. 275 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limits.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he will sanction the revision of speed limits in the Cork County area which have been submitted to him by Cork County Council.

The Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County Borough of Cork and County of Cork) Regulations, 1974, were made recently and will come into force on the 4th November, 1974.

46.

asked the Minister for Local Government when the next revision of speed limit areas will take place in County Clare.

I recently announced that the process of reviewing and recommending changes in speed limits will in future be carried out by local authorities and not by my Department as heretofore.

Accordingly any representations which the Deputy may wish to make in the matter might be brought to the attention of the Clare County Council.

May I ask the Minister if, in regard to the changes in the speed limits he is now proposing and in which the local authorities will have a part to play, he is saying that the local authority has the final say, or is there any provision in the circular he issued which states that the local authority proposals must be sent to the Department for their approval?

The idea is that the Garda and the local authorities will make the decision and we would like to know of the changes which have been made. The circular to which Deputy Molloy has referred is not as clear as it might be.

Ambiguous?

Ambiguous is the word.

Might I ask the Minister to issue some clarification of it?

That has been done.
