Vol. 275 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Car Parking Facilities.

47.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is satisfied that Dublin Corporation is allocating sufficient space for private car parking facilities; and, if not, if he proposes to take any steps in the matter.

The allocation of space for car parking facilities in Dublin city is primarily a matter for Dublin Corporation in the light of their traffic and planning objectives. I do not propose to intervene in the decisions made by the corporation towards attaining their objectives, which appear to be reasonable and do not envisage such a level of parking facilities as would add to traffic volumes and therefore traffic congestion.

In view of the fact that the State levies very heavy taxes on motorists and, if they park in a prohibited area, the State again collects £2 for that offence, surely the State should take some responsibility for ensuring that the local authorities will meet their responsibilities in these matters?

I would suggest that members of local authorities might also undertake their responsibilities in dealing with it. They know more about it than anybody else.
