Vol. 276 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - NI Registered Cars.

95.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the concern in the motor industry about the growth in the volume of vehicles registered in Northern Ireland which appear to be in illegal use, he will draw public attention, by advertisement or otherwise, to the circumstances in which a resident of the State may drive a car which is registered outside the State and to the penalties for a breach of the law in this regard.

I have no information that the position is as stated by the Deputy. If the Deputy has any information about the illegal use of Northern Ireland registered vehicles he should communicate it to the Garda.

Is the Minister aware of this being an abuse?

The Garda say that they have no complaints. I do not come into this particular case at all. I have no evidence there is anything wrong. If there is a complaint, the Garda would be glad to hear of it.

Within the last half hour I heard of an appalling case of this kind, although I cannot say cases are widespread.

If Deputy Colley would tell the Garda they would be glad to hear of it.

They know about this.

They would be glad to get it in writing.
