Vol. 277 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Poles.

59.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the removal of the poles erected by his Department at Marlfield Road, Clonmel, County Tipperary; and why they were erected without consultation with residents.

It is assumed that the question refers to poles serving a small residential estate off Marlfield Road. The Department are in correspondence with the local authority about the siting of the poles which were erected on private property with the permission of the occupiers concerned, including most of the residents.

I do not agree that it was with the permission of the residents that all the poles were erected. Is the Minister not aware that the planning permission for that area specified that there must not be any overhead cables or wires there and that, when getting ESB connection, most of the local residents had to pay £80 to get those cables laid underground? Now the Department come along and blatantly break this planning regulation. Would the Minister ensure that the cables are put underground to protect the scenic beauty of the area?

I have not seen the area but I believe there was no breach of planning regulations.

I have in my possession a letter from the planning authority which states that it is in breach of the planning permission.

If the Deputy will bring that to my attention I will be very glad to consider it.

If I do, will I get the usual treatment or will I get special treatment?
