Vol. 277 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crab Processing Plant.

77.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of failure of local interests to establish a crab processing plant at Carndonagh, County Donegal, he will now reconsider his previous decision and permit Ceimicí Teoranta to re-engage in this industry there.

The processing of crabs at Carndonagh was discontinued because the raw material supply position was not adequate to support this operation. I am advised that this position is unchanged. I do not, therefore, intend to permit Ceimicí Teoranta to re-engage in that industry.

Ceimicí Teoranta are at present engaged in negotiations which it is hoped will result in the acquistion of the plant by an undertaking interested in the processing of fish in general.

I may be confusing this with another Donegal crab factory, but is it not true that this factory failed through delays in obtaining money from the United States?

I do not think the Deputy is thinking of this factory.
