Vol. 277 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Denaturing of Agricultural Products.

60.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the advances, if any, that have been received since this country joined the EEC from the Agricultural Fund to finance the denaturing of agricultural products; and the characteristics of the denaturing which is referred to in the Third Report on Developments in the European Communities.

A total of £3.25 million has been received to-date from FEOGA in respect of the denaturing of skim milk powder, wheat and sugar. The vast bulk of the money received was in respect of skim milk powder, which was denatured for use as animal feed by the addition of lucerne meal or grass meal or by direct incorporation in compound feeding stuff. Wheat was likewise denatured for use as animal feed by the application of colorants or by direct incorporation in animal feeding stuffs. In the case of sugar small quantities were denatured by the addition of a chemical substance in order to make the sugar available to beekeepers at a reduced price.
