Vol. 277 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na gCapall Appointee.

61.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the name and qualifications of the recent appointee to Bord na gCapall.

The most recent appointee to membership of Bord na gCapall is Mr. Stan Diffley, Westcroft, Castleknock, County Dublin. Mr. Diffley, who is a prominent businessman, has a keen interest in horses and has exhibited successfully at shows.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say how the position was filled? Was it advertised? By whom were the interviews carried out? What are his qualifications for such an appointment to this board?

Mr. Diffley is a prominent businessman, has a keen interest in horses and has exhibited successfully at shows.

Would the Leas-Cheann Comhairle turn off the tape recorder? I asked how the appointment was made. Has Mr. Diffley any other qualifications than those mentioned by the Parliamentary Secretary?

I am aware of the type of qualifications that used to be required when the Deputy's party was in office.

Why was the chosen from so many others?

He was chosen because he was the most suitable to be a member of this board.

The Parliamentary Secretary, being a Member of the Labour Party, would not appreciate why Mr. Diffley was appointed.

He was appointed for the reasons set down in the reply I have given.
