Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Pollution.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government the action he proposes to take in relation to the report of the inter-departmental working group on water pollution; and if he has received representations from public and private interests on its recommendations.

Representations were received from various public and private interests on the recommendations contained in this report. Following consideration of the report and of the representations received, proposals for new legislation to provide for more effective control of water pollution were prepared and the drafting of a Bill on the subject is now at an advanced stage. Pending enactment of any such legislation, I am encouraging local authorities to take such interim action as is possible, including full use of their powers under planning legislation, to prevent and abate water pollution.

Can we expect a draft of this Bill, say, before the Summer Recess?

Just possibly. I would not like to promise Deputy Lemass. It is fairly complex but I will get it out as soon as I possibly can. I share his views.

I think it is about 18 months since the Minister published the report.

Yes, but it has been quite a job.
