Note: The threshold increase at (e) above is payable from 1st March, 1975 except in the cases of lorry drivers who received that increase on 1st January, 1975.

124.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that the order of the Agricultural Wages Board now before Dáil Éireann does not provide for the 10 per cent threshold increase payable under the national agreement from 1st March, 1975; and if any decision has been made on the form of new wages and conditions of employment legislation for the benefit of agricultural workers.

As the Deputy is aware, the function of the Agricultural Wages Board is to fix only the minimum rates of wages which should be paid to agricultural workers. The order in question provides for an increase of £2 a week in the minimum rates as from 3rd February, 1975. In fixing the minimum rates the board takes all relevant factors into consideration including the trend of wages generally and the capacity of farmers to pay. The question of introducing proposals for the amendment of legislation on wages and conditions of employment of agricultural workers is at present under consideration in consultation with the various interests concerned and it is expected that a decision will be reached at an early date.
