Vol. 279 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Standard Sized Packages.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the fact that in the UK such items as washing powder are now packaged in standard Euro packs, he will ensure that similar sized packs will be introduced in this country so that the public will know exactly the quantity of washing powder or other product they are getting for the purchasing price and be thus in a better position to make comparisons between one brand and another.

The object which the Deputy proposes is already secured in this country by an order, operative from 1st February, 1974, made under the Merchandise Marks Act, 1970 and requiring pre-packs of a wide range of goods, including washing powders and similar products, to carry an indication of the quantity contained in them. The adoption of standard-sized packages which he suggests would not necessarily achieve this aim.
