Vol. 279 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electric Fire Regulations.

23.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the regulations he has made under the European Community Acts which provide that electric fires may not be placed on the market unless they are safe.

On the 24th March last I made regulations entitled European Communities (Low Voltage Electrical Equipment) Regulations, 1975. These regulations will give effect to an EEC Directive (No. 73/23). The object of the regulations is to ensure that equipment manufactured and installed with a voltage rating of between 50 volts and 1,000 volts for alternating current and between 75 volts and 1,500 volts for direct current will not be such as to endanger the safety of persons, domestic animals or property.

Electric fires which come within these limits will be covered by the regulations and may not be placed on the market unless they conform to them.

The regulations will come into force on 1st August, 1975.
