Vol. 279 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Insurance.

24.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that insurance companies have increased motor cover by 40 to 45 per cent to straightforward non-claim policy holders; and if this is in accordance with his authority.

I am not aware that any insurance company have increased their basic premium rates by more than the amount—up to a maximum of 40 per cent—which I agreed to give those companies who submitted schemes for the reduction of loadings. All the 15 leading insurance companies submitted schemes and are entitled to apply the increases sanctioned to the basic rates of all policyholders, but there should be reductions in the rates of loadings paid by many policyholders.

If the Deputy is aware of any instance where a driver's basic premium rate has been increased by more than 40 per cent I will have the case investigated if he sends me details.
