Vol. 285 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Guidance Teachers.

17.

asked the Minister for Education the number of recognised guidance teachers working in each post-primary school category.

The numbers of recognised teachers at present serving as guidance teachers in post-primary schools are as follows:

Secondary schools

185

Comprehensive schools

11

Community schools

11

Vocational schools

80

Total

287

Would the Minister state whether he intends making further facilities available for the training of extra guidance teachers?

The conditions under which guidance teachers may be appointed in second level schools in 1975-76 are set out in the circular letter 34/75 issued to managers of secondary schools in May, 1975 and 34/75 issued to vocational education committees on 16th June, 1975.

The Minister will agree that some teachers find it difficult to get places in colleges which train guidance teachers.

I hope we have overcome any difficulties which may have arisen in this regard.

I am sure the Minister will agree that this is a vital service.
