asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if his Department have commenced the analysis of metals in shellfish having particular regard to the country's commitment under the appropriate convention on this matter; and if he will state the quantities of lead, copper, zinc, mercury and cadmium in mussels, limpets and cockles.

Analyses of shellfish for heavy metal concentration are being carried out in accordance with our international obligations. The levels of concentration disclosed by these analyses are not injurious to fish life or human health. I have had the most recent results for the species and metals mentioned by the Deputy summarised in a tabular statement which I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report.
