Vol. 286 No. 12

Written Answers. - Hearing Aid Grants.

98.

asked the Minister for Health if he will increase the grants available for hearing aids; he is satisfied that the hearing aids approved by his Department are the best available; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Hearing aids made available by health boards for eligible persons are free of charge to those persons. The hearing aid service for such persons is operated by the National Rehabilitation Board, on behalf of the health boards. In general, the standard hearing aids supplied meet the needs of persons availing themselves of the service. In a small number of cases where the standard aid is not adequate, special types of hearing aid are supplied by the National Rehabilitation Board with the approval of the health board concerned.
