Vol. 289 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare Garda Station.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will reconsider opening a Garda station at Feakle, County Clare, in view of the recent spate of robberies in the area and the increase in the number of tourists and visitors; and, if not, if he will consider arranging for one member of the Garda Síochána to reside in the area.

The Commissioner has informed me that, having reviewed the arrangements for the policing of the Feakle area, he does not consider that the reopening of a station at the centre would be justified at present.

With some exceptions, which are irrelevant to the question, the accepted practice in the Garda Síochána is that a member is free to live where he chooses provided he does not live at an unreasonable distance from his station, and I do not think that a case for curtailing this freedom has been established.
